Mini Mustangs

About the Mini Mustang Program

We want our littlest swimmers to feel that they are part of the bigger picture, developing a sense of belonging on the larger team.

That’s why our beginner swimmer group is the “Mini Mustangs”! The Mini Mustang program is the first experience many swimmers have with swim team, and with our excellent coaching staff, they get to have a fun and quality experience, learning stroke mechanics and how to participate as a team member.

All swimmers, including Mini Mustangs, must be members of the Mosby Woods Pool.

Qualifications needed: To be eligible for the Mini Mustang Program, swimmers should be between the ages of 4 and 8 years, and they must demonstrate the ability to:

  • easily separate from parent
  • consistently and willingly submerge their face
  • propel body 5-10 meters forward from the side of the pool on either their tummy or back (this should be in a place where the child can NOT touch the bottom)

Evaluations: Mini Mustangs must demonstrate the skills above before participating in the program. New Minis will be required to ‘show off their skills’ to a coach on Friday, May 31st between 5-6 pm. This year, only new Mini Mustangs will need to be evaluated.

If you are unsure if you want to register your child, we encourage them to participate in evaluations. Click here to get more info and indicate your intention to participate in Evals!

For safety purposes, swimmers will be evaluated one at a time, and a coach will be in the water at all times during evaluations. However, children will be learning in a small group setting and should have the ability to maintain an appropriate amount of focus to safely participate.

Practice Dates and Times: The official Mini Mustang program runs for five weeks, beginning on June 13 and ending on July 19; we will also have some preseason practices after school and some Sunday time slots. Registered Mini Mustangs ( register here) will receive information about those practices via email. Mini Mustangs will have the opportunity to participate in a Lollipop Meet to finish out the season on Friday, July 19th.

What Practice is Like: During practice, our little swimmers will work on introductory stroke mechanics with coaches in freestyle and backstroke. The coaches use standard teaching techniques, including games, to keep our youngest swimmers engaged and safe.

Lollipop Meet: The Lollipop Meet--2024's date will be Friday, July 19 at 6 pm--is an opportunity for our Mini Mustangs and new swimmers ages 8 and under to demonstrate the skills that they have gained over the summer for their family, friends and older swim team members.

For additional information about the Mini Mustang program, please contact the Mini Mustang Program Coordinators, Eliza Selander at [email protected] or Laura Bowles at [email protected].
